Arnold made a great point in this speech/video I posted: Break the rules. Not the law, but the rules.
We all want to get along. Most of us also want to be cordial and nice and liked. And we all also know that there are times in life when we need to break the rules, or simply make our own rules of conduct, to get where or what we want. I guess it depends on how much we really need to get it done, but you all know and have experienced what I'm talking about.
What happens -- and is the crux of this point -- is that you only know these moments by the whisper of instinct. There aren't any overt, obvious signs that you're in a do-what-you-gotta-do situation until after the moment has passed. The good part is that we all have the instincts. We all get that small whispering sound in our heads or our guts as to what need to be done or said. The bad part is that so many of us have trained ourselves to ignore our instincts and do things out or routine or fear or lack or self-confidence.
These bad parts are also rules. Rules that someone else, or you, have set for yourself that can be easily broken once you make the choice to do so. You have to be willing to throw away what you'e been (self-)taught and listen to that inner voice that has never been wrong.
