Why You're A "Nobody" With No Friends

I was playing in a basketball league in Miramar (a suburb north of Miami) in 2013.

Brian, a guy I’d met at my every-day gym (the one I made all the YouTube videos in) had invited me to play. I didn't know the other guys on the team.

In the first game, I made a buzzer-beating 3 pointer to win the game.

Meaning, I shot the ball, the ball was in the air when the buzzer went off, the shot went in, and won us the game. It was the first and ONLY buzzer-beater I ever made in basketball. I’ve made some game-winning shots, but never a buzzer-beater.

Though this was nothing more than a local rec-league game that no one cared about, I was happy about it.

Problem: I had no one to call and share it with.

I wasn't dating anyone at the time. The last girl I’d talked to was a woman I’d been on a date with a few weeks earlier who I wasn't attracted to and didn't plan on speaking to again. I called her anyway. She indulged me about my game-winning shot. I never called her again after that, and she never called me.

And, no one was filming this game. So you have to take my word that this happened. 😊

Many people are living their entire lives how I lived that night.

You have a phone, but no one to call.
Social media access, with no friends.
Projects you’re doing, but no one to bounce ideas off of.
Things to be fixed, but no one to help you with where to begin.

You're flying solo.

No one knows you, and you don't know anyone.

Isolation is dangerous.

“Lone wolves” have to kill 100% of what they eat.
Pack wolves can eat even when they do none of the killing. Pack wolves benefit from the efforts of others, and vice-versa.

Life is MUCH easier when you’re well-connected and leveraging relationships. You will get A LOT more done through other people than you will ever do by yourself.

Most of the “information” you want and need is not on google or in books.
It’s in the minds and experiences of other people. Your next-door neighbors, industry peers, and people who would be your friends… if you knew them and they knew you. They're available; you just have to talk to them.

But you don't know them. They are strangers to you because you don't talk to anyone. You’re not proactively making connections and building relationships. So, everything you achieve is 100% based on your abilities.

You might think this is a good thing. Here’s why it’s not.

YOU’RE NOT GOOD AT EVERYTHING.

Most humans are professional-level (i.e., you can earn a full time living on the open market) at 1 or 2 things; 3 things if you're super-talented. So if you’re doing 7 things in your business, you’re average-at-best at 5 of them. And every minute you spend doing those average-at-best things, you’re NOT doing the stuff that you’re actually good at. So you're losing money.

But, someone else is great at that stuff. And you could benefit from their efforts… if you knew them. And if they knew you.

This is the value of relationships, networking, and being connected.
This is why you attend events.
This is why you say “hello” in the elevator.
This is why you go outside.
This is why you make yourself findable and discoverable when you have demonstrable value.

So you don't make a buzzer-beater and drive home by yourself with no one to share it with.
