Be. Do. Have.
There is a list of things, maybe written down, maybe not – in your life, that you know you want to do, but you have not yet begun to do.
Why are you not doing them?
Most people would answer that they lack resources.
Time.
Information.
How-to.
Access to people or tools.
These are all GOOD answers. None of these is the REAL answer.
The reason you are not doing those things — and this applies to all people who have a list of things we have not yet done — is that we have not yet gotten our minds into a state in which we are activated to take the necessary actions.
Motivation is but one form of this mental activation.
Another form is the acceptance that a different approach – which would lead to different actions – is necessary.
Another form is new knowledge or a new insight that changes the way you think about things.
The big idea is, your mindset must change before your actions can change.
You cannot install a Ferrari engine in the frame of a Toyota vehicle.
Well, you can, technically – but the outcome would not be good.
In this metaphor, the Ferrari engine is a set of actions. The Toyota vehicle is your mindset.
They are incompatible.
For example, let’s say that you’d earned $70,000 last year. Then, I gave you the weekly activity list of someone who earned $8 million last year, and told you to behave like this person for a week by following the activity list.
Would you do it?
You would be highly resistant to following the $8 million person’s schedule – even though you very much want the $8 million.
Even though you want the outcome, your mind is not there yet.
Here’s an even bigger idea:
No human can perform consistently in a way that is incongruent with their self-image.
The reason why you have things you want to do, yet you’re still not doing them, is because your mental self-image has not yet aligned with the actions you’d need to take.
Until or unless you change your mindset, the actions will not happen. Even if you force-feed yourself into the actions – people try doing this (and fail) with discipline – you will not remain consistent in those actions, and eventually you go back to where your mindset wants you to be.
This is why mindset is the foundation of what we do at Work On Your Game.
Once we adjust your thinking, we can adjust your actions.
