There are two times, and only two times, you will ever see a line outside of a library or bookstore…
One.
On college campuses, at the end of a semester, when the school bookstore buys a $70 textbook back from a student for $12. Legal robbery that students line up to be victims of (myself included).
These are the books that we paid top dollar for, to get the degrees that many tout throughout their lives as making them “educated” – but they sell the books back for $.20 on the dollar.
Interesting.
Two.
When some celebrity, or relative celebrity, does a book signing at a bookstore.
People line up with copies of the book, or to buy a copy of the book, and have it signed by the famous author, shake their hand, and take a picture with the person.
Newsflash: Most of the books sold at book signings do NOT get read. Opening the cover to get the book signed is about as far as most buyers “read” that book.
On the other hand, there are always lines and crowds outside of concert halls, sporting events, movie theaters, restaurant openings, and nightclubs.
With that in mind, consider this.
Most people will tell you that their biggest current challenge has something to do with a lack of some form of “logical” material.
Ex: Information, how-to, strategy, answers, knowledge…
Why, then, do you never see a line of people outside of a library or a bookstore – other than for a celebrity book signing or to sell books BACK to the bookstore? If all anyone needs – see that list again – is information-based…???
Because, although most people SAY that they want or need information, and the only thing in their way is a lack of logical material, most people’s actions are a reflection of their desire for things that create an EMOTIONAL response or connection.
Information alone cannot do this.
People have an emotional connection to their favorite musical artist.
We get emotionally connected to the hometown sports team.
We feel emotionally connected when part of the in-crowd whose first line for the hot new restaurant in town.
Yes – people DO need information. But, if you want to get information to (most) people, you cannot offer them just that. Most people who need it are too lazy to go get it, if that’s all they get.
Hence, the empty library. Last I checked, the library is free. You can sit in there all day and read every book you want, and no one will bother you. It is a candy store of information.
And, the public library in your town is completely empty right now.
If you live in a crowded home and want a quiet place to not be bothered, go to the library. It’s dead quiet and there are no people.
If you want to move people to action AND give them information, you need to connect with them on an emotional level in some way.
Everyone has different emotional triggers, for different reasons, at different times.
Your job as a marketer is to figure out what those triggers are, pull those triggers, and give them the information – the logic – in the process.
2% of people are primarily moved by logic. They’re in the library right now.
98% are moved by emotion. They’re at the movies.
Even logic-leaning people are moved by emotion.
Your Job: Find out, then (ethically) exploit people's emotional reasons for doing things. It will serve you well in business.
