What To Do When Your Field is Full of Competition

'Well Dre, I really want to build my business on ________, but there are so many other people doing it already!'

I have conversations daily with personal trainers, basketball enthusiasts, real estate agents and others. Almost always, the initial hurdle has been cleared: They knew what they want to do. There's an idea of how to do it, too: leverage the internet, reach people virtually who you couldn't reach physically.

I get Socratic with people at this point. "If you had to get started today with no further information, what would you do?"

FACT: I've never once had a person say 'I have no idea.' There's always an answer.

"So, what are you waiting for?"

Long pause.

I don't know.

(nervous laughter)

Me.

(chuckle in spite of themselves)

I just... haven't done it.

I get it: Your field of expertise is saturated. You don't know if anyone will catch on to your content. You really don't know if your goods will sell. And it's just so damn crowded.

News Flash: It will be even more crowded tomorrow. 300 hours of YouTube videos are uploaded per minute. In your field of ______, no one is leaving. If you think it's crowded now, it will even worse next week, later this year and 4 years from now.

How many times have you been told to start now? Probably a lot. Here are 3 reasons why you keep hearing it.

You have more competition who you don't even know about. Yeah, they're peeking at the pool too, wondering how cold the water is - just like you. They haven't jumped in yet either. You can beat them to the punch.
First and different > Better. Your first product will suck. There are others with more experience who have more and better stuff. So what! Do it anyway.

What if you don't take action? What is your alternative? What life will you be left with if you don't make this change? What will you have to settle for? What if everything stays exactly the same for the next 5 years? Are you OK with that outcome?

Your biggest competition can also be your best friend and accountability coach: You.
