Players ask me questions about what they should work on to get better. What to work on for the team they're trying our for in a month or so. What to work on based on their size or based on whom they're getting ready to face or based on what they're not good at. These questioners don't always like when I answer with --
It's your job to know what you need to get better at.
You're the one out there every day. Working, failing, succeeding, learning. You know what you can do and what you can't do. You know where your strengths and weaknesses lie. You know, if you sit and think about it, what the difference is between where you are and where you want to be. If you don't know know these things, or you wanna be cute and act like you don't, your next order of business is to figure out the answers to these questions.
Reflecting on your work -- what you have been doing, why you're even doing it, where it is taking you -- is part of your business. Reflection is not a job to be outsourced to some guru who will tell you what to do next. Being you is a 24 hour gig for you. After all that time, if you don't know you (or your business), how the hell can you expect anyone else to know you?
Own yourself. See yourself. Know yourself.
