I used to work at a corporate-owned gym. Having personality there was fine, as long as it didn’t cross imaginary lines laid out by the corporate office. My co-workers were dull. They seemed to have no life to them. They weren’t excited about their futures.
I worked at the gym less than a year; I came to see that the longer someone had been working there, the less useful they were as a conversation participant. They’d run out of things to say.
I once hung up on an unhelpful IT guy at that same corporate job; my boss came to my desk a few minutes later (IT had called my boss and told on me) looking as if he’d seen a ghost. He told me very carefully that I couldn’t do that again.
