It is very seldom that a person takes charge of a situation and gets stopped from doing so. People are waiting, hoping, for someone to step up and grab the wheel.
Most will welcome you in assuming the leadership role. Very few people want that responsibility of leading and being responsible for the group. Even if you're not the most polished candidate, the fact that you take all the pressure off of everyone else when you take the lead makes you the best option. And they will let you -- but you must take it.
Everyone is timid and nervous and unsure of themselves. So when you step up and start directing and essentially say, "I'm running this," you will find little opposition.
