I grew up swimming in Philadelphia City Parks Department public pools.

Those were the only pools available. If a kid was going to swim, it would be there or nowhere. Usually it was nowhere. When I did swim at those parks, what I remember most — aside from all the Black kids running around wildly — was the smell of bleach.
