Watching the NFL’s Red Zone Network (they flip between games and show you all the possible scoring plays) one Sunday, the Washington Redskins were close to the end zone. They ran a play where the ball was handed off to personal-initiative taker Adrian Peterson, who was hit and tackled almost as soon as the ball was handed to him for a loss of about two yards.
The play-by-play and stat sheet from the game will say what happened: Peterson ran for minus two yards on the play. What the stat sheets will miss is that Vernon Davis, Peterson’s teammate who played tight end on this play, completely missed his block — his block of the very guy who tackled Peterson for that loss.
