Having a target is a good thing.
A target gives you something to live for. A reason to get out of bed in the morning. A desired outcome. I wrote The Mental Workbook around the concept of goals and reaching them, after all.
(Some people prefer to have systems — “go to the gym 3x per week,” instead of “lose 15 pounds,” for example — but for purposes of this conversation, they’re the same: something you aim to do.)
The problem many people have, especially in our microwave-mentality world, is not the target, but the TIMELINE.
We expect the outcomes too quickly, and are quick to sour on the target when it doesn’t happen fast enough.
Our daily lives condition us to want things quickly.
You can write a “blog post” in 280 characters instead of sitting down and scribing a book.
Watch any TV show instantly, when back in MY day, we had to actually wait until the show came on TV.
INSTAgram rather than taking 24 photos and taking the film to the pharmacy to be developed.
Stories told in 15 second increments (or less).
“?” Texts when someone doesn’t respond quickly enough.
We just expect things to be fast.
Look, I like having things happen quickly just like you do. It’s made life better for all of us in many ways.
But we need to remember to have the discipline and mental toughness to remind ourselves that our most valuable desired outcomes have long timelines.
Your business probably won’t make $1 Million in your first year.
Most basketball players don’t go from benchwarmer to NBA prospect in one season.
If you follow me on Instagram (@DreBaldwin), you’ve seen the slow, daily progress of construction via the #OneDayAtATime hashtag I like to use.
So, have targets. As many as your heart desires.
At the same time, respect the process that you’ll have to go through to get there — and don't get impatient if yours isn’t as short as someone else’s.
