The main source creating the weakened society we live in is people’s inability to see or hear anything they disagree with without coming unhinged.
In a free speech land, there is no “misinformation,” “disinformation” or (the new creation) “malinformation.”
Free speech means just that.
There are no perfect scenarios in life; only trade-offs.
The trade-off of free speech is that people are free to be —
Racist
Sexist
Ageist
Misogynist
Homophobic
Transphobic
Antisemitic
Bigoted
— and every other label you can throw out.
Even if I’m none of these and/or don't want to be, I will defend YOUR right to be them. That’s what free speech means.
This means you have the right to be —
Wrong
Inaccurate
Non-affirming
Factually incorrect
Sarcastic
Hyperbolic
Rude
Mean
Nasty
Inconsiderate
Unwelcoming
Annoying
— and everything else.
If I disagree with your position, I don’t want you canceled. I want you to speak early, loudly and often, and let the marketplace of ideas prove you wrong (or right).
There are plenty of people and ideas that I disagree with. I don’t want them to go away. I want them outside and active. If they’re wrong, let life and their outcomes prove the truth.
Oh, and what of the people whom these “wrong” folks influence with their “wrong” ideas?
You and I have the freedom to follow who we wish. Your bad or good judgement (in choosing whom to follow) is also a freedom.
That's how free speech works. It’s how free thought works. And it’s what we all should fight for.
If you can’t stomach hearing something that you disagree with, don’t check the person who said it. Check yourself.
Free speech means free speech. Not “speech you like and agree with.”
