Sometimes, when asked a question via email or Snapchat, I reply with a link to some resource that will answer the posed question. Sometimes, I get this response:
"Is it free?"
Free is good for some things. Someone is practicing the art of giving. Everyone gets some. And hey, you don't have to pay! The best things in life are free, as they say.
Free also has some problems. When you live off of free stuff, you're no longer in control, and control is requirement of power. When you're getting a handout, you don't get it when you want it -- you get it when it is given to you. And you don't get it the way you want it or in the amount you want it. Or maybe you do, but you can't depend on that always happening. Freeloaders can't make any demands and get treated with the least amount of respect, especially by those who pay.
When you're paying, you get things when and how you want them. Think of a restaurant or valeting your car. The person paying calls the shots and makes the decisions. Think of your parents when you live in their home.
Getting and seeking only what's free slowly eats away at your freedom, one small nibble at a time. You may think you're getting away with a great deal, but you are actually the sucker at the table.
