Short on confidence, but you need it in a pinch? Here’s what you do – in this order…
1) Borrowed confidence.
I often tell business owners: The decisions you make need to be based on the business you WANT to have – not for the business you CURRENTLY have.
You’re nervous about investing money? Would you be nervous if your business was doing triple its current revenue?
You need to invest based on THAT business, not today’s business. Because you can never get to that 3x revenue thinking like the 1x person you are today.
This is a derivative of what I used to tell athletes (and what my most popular TEDxTalk centers around [http://WorkOnYourGame.com/TED]).
If you don’t have confidence for your next game, think of your favorite player.
How would Steph Curry or LeBron walk on to the court for your next game? How would they feel about themselves? What kind of energy would they have?
Now, show up with THAT energy, and play YOUR game.
This is how you “borrow” confidence.
2) Courage.
The biggest mistake most people make when lacking confidence is thinking that they need to go find that confidence somewhere.
Numerous times, I’ve seen a person pass on an opportunity to take themselves forward, in business or in life, because they “didn’t have the confidence” to take the next step.
When you are doing something new, you will not have any confidence. You’re not supposed to. So, if you go looking for it, of course you will not find it. Which often becomes an excuse people use to keep themselves in the same place throughout their lives.
It’s a tragedy.
Seeking confidence for a new behavior is an inaccurate formula, and the main reason why many people have very little confidence.
Confidence is based on past experience. It is defined as your belief and your ability to do something – which can only exist if you have actually done that thing. Anything you haven’t done before, you have no history to draw on, and thus no reason to be confident.
So, stop looking for confidence. Instead, look for courage.
Courage is what you draw on when you are doing something new, have no history of doing it, but you need to step forward and take action anyway.
That borrowed confidence from the first point will supply the courage you need to move forward.
3) Action.
Now you have the balls to take action.
Go and do the thing that you know you need to do.
Make the tough decision.
Stop procrastinating.
Break the inertia.
And congratulate yourself for actually doing something, even if not done perfectly.
Now you have…
4) Confidence.
Confidence is the last thing you get in this process, that started with you having none. Now you have an accurate formula.
Your belief and your ability to do something only comes after you summon the courage to try it, take action, see the outcome and results, and then can look back and see your experience.
There is no confidence without action.
There is no action without courage.
There’s no need for courage unless you are doing something new.
Now you have a formula for believing in yourself. Apply it often.
