Actor Geoffrey Owens used to play Elvin on The Cosby Show (the only show we religiously watched as a family every Sunday evening) back in the 1980s and 90s. Still an actor, Owens was photographed and “outed” as a grocery store bagger at a Trader Joe’s in New Jersey. The photos led to jokes and internet slander.
I don’t follow a lot of social media accounts, so the joking/shaming that followed Owens didn’t reach me until I came across the article about it and him, which showed me how little people know about “gig” businesses like acting.
For Your Game
What do people expect a thespian to do between acting jobs? Acting is one of those on-again, off-again businesses — like basketball — where one may have to work “regular,” menial jobs in between paying gigs. I did it myself. Getting “in,” and being on a single show/in a commercial/acting in a movie isn’t the end of the work. Now you have to book the next one. It’s a volatile line of work.
