I was thinking about my college basketball experience.
There were a lot of things I could’ve done differently. A lot of circumstances that I wish had gone differently, as it would’ve made my path a lot easier.
But then I realized: The fact that things went left, that should-have-been-easy situations became hard, is the exact reason why I made it.
Basketball is a team sport. 12-15 players on every team. I played with a lot of players. Most of them only played for as long as it was easy and convenient.
Most of my college teammates, when the seasons ended, I never saw them in the gym again. They never played pickup, didn't lift weights, and did no individual skill practice.
As soon as it wasn’t easy anymore? Poof. Gone. Career over.
When it got hard for me, I kept going.
When it seemed impossible, I kept going.
When it was wholly unreasonable to even try, I kept going.
That’s why I made it.
Your path to success (assuming that’s where you’re going) is not supposed to be easy.
Success is hard. Achieving something that most people want — but won’t get — will be challenging.
It’s what you do when it gets challenging that makes all the difference.
That’s why I wrote my book The Third Day: The Decision That Separates The Pros From The Amateurs.
