I Sang Karaoke In An Uber 🚘🎤

Another true story…

I had an afternoon flight. I decided to try something I’d never done before by scheduling my ride to the airport.

Around 9 AM, I scheduled and paid $37 for a Lyft ride to pick me up at 11:30 AM to take me to Miami Airport.

I was outside my building at 11:30. Opened the Lyft app.

The Lyft schedule ride was LATE.

Not just a little late, either. The driver was 17 MINUTES away.

Early is on time.
On time is late.
Late is forgotten.

I HATE being late. Especially when it’s —

1) Someone else’s fault and
2) Preventable.

How did Lyft screw this up?

I canceled the late Lyft. Opened the Uber app instead.

I ordered an Uber XL for $23.95. The car was 1 minute away. The driver arrived in a Lincoln Navigator SUV.

The car had a tablet held upright in the back center console. I could choose the music via Spotify. Nice.

There were also two microphones in the back cup holder.

I asked the driver what the mics were for.

“Karaoke. Wanna try?”

I laughed, but declined.

Then I changed my mind.

I put on “If I Ruled The World” by Nas.

The driver turned the sounds up and I did a bit of the first verse.

Service workers: THIS is how you earn a tip on your work.

This was a normal, nondescript Uber ride to Miami Airport. It took all of 15 minutes. But here I am, writing about it.

The ride was nothing special. But I will REMEMBER the experience.

Once safely at the airport, I opened the Uber app and max-tipped my driver 25%.

***

I ate at a burger shop in Miami this past weekend. I had my son with me. While reading the menu — updated since the last time I’d been there — there was a note about gratuity.

In addition to the normal “18% added to parties of 6 or more,” was this note.

“Our team members work hard. Please show your appreciation by tipping them.”

Garbage.

Here’s the definition of gratuity: something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service.

A tip is EXTRA.

It’s not owed or deserved. You don’t guilt your customers into paying it.

You work hard? Good. Me too.

If you want more money, you have some options.

1) Raise prices and make your products / services worth it.

2) Go above and beyond in your service so that people like me talk about it to thousands of friends. Make me WANT to give you that “extra”.

I’ve noticed at a lot of service businesses how companies are getting more aggressive at asking for or even blatantly auto-adding tips (where you must manually REMOVE it) during the payment process.

I disagree with this practice.

If you run a business and your staff needs more money, make better products and give better service.

If you have a job and want more money, be more remarkable.

What that means: Do your work in a way that makes someone like me REMARK about you. Like I’m doing now for my Uber experience.

In episode #1025 of my Work On Your Game MasterClass, I explained how “The Opportunity Is Always In The Opposites.”

What that means: The best opportunity for standing out is in doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing.

In every space, most of the people are average.

Your neighbors.
Your relatives.
Your classmates.
Your teammates.
Your co-workers.
Your competition.

Most of them are average.

Which is good news: Just watch them, see what they’re doing / NOT doing, and make it your business to NOT do / DO that.

Identify how you can be the opposite of them.

If you do the same as them, you’ll be average like them.

Success is simple — not easy, but simple — when you break it down this way.

That’s why I’m here 😎.
