✍️ How To Be A Good Writer

[Good = People will pay money / attention for your written words]

1) Have Some Personality And Express It.

I write how I talk.

When I give professional speeches, I speak how I talk.

If you listen to my daily Work On Your Game MasterClass, you’ll have a good feel for who I am - because I talk on the mic exactly how I would talk to you in person.

My written and spoken “on camera” persona has been honed over years of creating content, explaining myself, answering questions, and helping people understand what I understand from my perspective.

I have a specific angle and approach.

If someone reads your stuff regularly, and your name is missing from the next thing you put out, your regular readers should be able to tell that it came from you without even seeing your name.

When people read your stuff, they should hear your voice at the same time.

This is what happens when you have captured your personality in the written word.

Most humans have personality; not all of them express it in their writing. The barrier: Trying not to offend anyone.

Vanilla is only good for ice cream and Oreo filling.

2) Ditch ChatGPT.

I know it’s all the craze these days. I use it for some things, like providing me with a list of ideas when I am pressed for one.

But.

I will never employ ChatGPT to write for me.

There are more apps and AI coming – I keep a working list – that claim they can write a lot better than ChatGPT. There are apps that claim they will capture your voice, and write an article as if it came from you. Your friends and readers would not be able to tell the difference, they say. AND it’s SEO-optimized.

I believe them (somewhat). I talk about this in a series on business uses for AI on my free daily master class (starting at episode #2759).

But I need to see it, and have it done for me, before I would ever offload the task of writing my own words.

ChatGPT is good for cookie cutter, SEO-targeted content. If you’re a person who wants to build up a blog, put ads on it, drive traffic, and sell the site to some company for your next business exit, chat, GPT is great for you.

But, if you’re looking to build a real relationship, with a real audience of real humans, and do business through that, you need to find your voice and write it yourself.

3) Embrace Unique Ability.

Unique ability is NOT a specific skill or job.

I used to play professional basketball. I have written a bunch of books. I am a well experienced speaker and content creator. None of those is a unique ability, nor is any of these my unique ability.

They are not yours either.

My unique ability is the ability to take a complex concept, break it down into bite-size pieces, then put it back together in a way that anyone can understand.

This skill is transferable from sports to writing to entrepreneurship to mindset to anything else I could choose to do. Your unique ability is not limited to a certain job or context. You need to know what it is, and your writing should reflect it.

4) Say Something That ONLY YOU Can Say.

There is a simple way to do this. Talk about things that you have personally experienced, and your personal thoughts on those experiences.

No one else can tell the story of something that you personally experienced from your angle.

No one can explain your thoughts better than you can.

What are some things that you believe or think, or do that most people think are crazy? You can start there.

Writing is but one tool you can use to build your brain, your relationship with your audience, and in turn, your business. In Work On Your Game University, we work with people like you to identify your unique ability, hone in on it, and squeeze the juice out of it.
