I shot some shots on the basketball court one day a couple weeks ago.
While I made a solid 60% of my tracked shots, I felt better about my work than what the percentages said. Of the 40% that I missed, many of those shots felt good: On target, released properly, “healthy bounces” off the rim even while off the mark.
I call these shots “good misses.”
For Your Game
Of course we want to make every shot, close every sale, win every game. But, when that doesn’t happen, there are levels to our shortcomings. When someone shoots a basketball and misses, sometimes that miss looks terrible — as if that player could shoot a hundred shots and make none — and sometimes it looks good, as if the next time that player shoots, there’s a good chance that it goes in. These are the good misses.
