If you’ve ever considered doing one of those traveling teams as your way into pro ball, I found a detailed account of how they work.
I just recently read this article (30-minute read time; read it) that details the journey of a handful of guys who went on one of those “Get An Overseas Job” tours. This is the type where you try out (somewhere in the USA), and if you make the team you purchase a round trip flight and pay a fee to the tour organizer(s) for travel expenses. The team goes to a country (or countries) to play exhibition games and — hopefully — someone gets on.
The article came out in 2015 and I don’t know how I missed it; I actually dealt with the coach who’s mentioned during my playing days when he was coaching for a team in a league ten years ago.
I never seriously considered one of these tours myself, but I knew many players who did and have. Results have been mixed. Read the article and use the information in the way that works best for you.
