I’m on a flight today.
Since I like to be early, I spent my hour-plus prior to boarding the plane browsing the airport bookstore.
What I saw concerns me.
People who have nothing useful to add to the silence are writing books. For the sake of this post, I’ll spare you their names.
I'm not mad at them for it. Writing a book is still a talking point, an “I-did-this” that impresses people. And, if someone offered me a check to write a book, I’d write another one (maybe).
But, here’s why I’m concerned for you: Writing a book is going the way of the podcast.
Translated: It’s so accessible, easy to do, and so many are doing it, having one is no longer unique.
This doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t have one. But it does mean that a book alone won’t move the needle like it used to.
Books and podcasts are just two categories that have suffered a loss in perceived prestige because of democratized access.
A blue check on social media.
Females with their ass out on Instagram.
Having a TikTok video take off.
Scarcity increases value.
The more available a thing is, the less its value.
This is important if you sell (or plan to sell) intellectual property (aka knowledge, information, courses, how-to material). A (good) book takes a lot of time and work, but doesn’t make you different if everybody has one. To make yourself known and valuable to potential clients, you have to have more.
If you already have a book and you now want help with that “more” — OR you were thinking about writing a book and this revelation has thrown a wrench in your plans — get in touch with me ASAP.
