Playing sports as a job seems pretty simple, maybe downright easy. You have to be skilled and compete, of course, but at the core it’s still a damn game. How hard can it be?

It’s only when you’re in the trenches, having to show up every day (even in practices) and compete — HARD — against players who are just as good as you, that you realize how much of challenge being “ready to play” is. Competing that hard is mentally and physically taxing, taxing enough that a day off would help — but you don’t get one.
