#7: Finding Your Purpose In Life [WOYG Podcast]

[TRANSCRIPT] Finding Your Purpose in life

Having a purpose is probably the most important piece of motivation or inspiration that you can possibly have in your life. Individuals who possess a strong sense of purpose and a strong reason for living have something that leads their ambitions and motivates their actions.

Finding your true purpose in life will allow you to take your current actions and help fuel these to help you work toward your goals.

In my research and study of people who are highly successful in their fields, I found that each successful individual has reached a point in their lives where they found their purpose.

It’s not about how much money you’ve made;

It’s not about anything material that you can buy;

It’s not necessarily about taking a vacation;

It’s not about any type of sneakers or clothes that you wear;

It’s a certain purpose that you have to find within yourself.

When I was looking at the story of one of my favorite entertainers – 50 Cent. He started selling drugs but he found his purpose – he wanted to become a musician. And so, he started rapping and he began gaining success in his field. He was close to bringing out his first album as a rapper before he got shot.

While recuperating, 50 found his purpose.

He started having visions in his mind showing him who he was going to be, and how he was going to be successful; it all started coming together in his mind first; He found his purpose and everything, from that point forward, was history.

Another musician is Jay-Z. A lot of people don’t know this about Jay-Z, but after his second album, Volume 1, which was released around the time when Puff Daddy was dominating rap music, his sound wasn’t catching a lot of fans during that time so he performed as the opening act for Puff Daddy’s tour in 1997.

After a few shows, Jay-Z quit that tour, saying of his departure,.

“I felt like I was selling myself short.”

He went to the studio and he recorded the album that became “Volume 2: Hard Knock Life,” and that album took Jay-Z from being a rap star to a pop superstar. Before Vol. 2, the only people who knew Jay-Z were hardcore rap fans. After Vol. 2, people who didn’t even listen to rap started to know who Jay-Z was. He’d found his purpose: he needed to be in control of what he was doing, and that’s when he started being more of a businessman and executive in his company. Everything, as they say, from that point is history.

It is not necessary to go through a deep tragedy in order to find your purpose.

Another example is Michael Jordan. He first found his purpose when he was in high school; Back then, he didn’t even make the varsity basketball team, which we know can be devastating for an athlete. But in the bigger scheme of things, it was just a game and he just didn’t make the team. However, for Michael Jordan, that helped him find his purpose and it propelled him to the NBA.

He found another purpose when he kept losing to the Detroit Pistons. Although he was already the best player in the NBA, he wasn’t winning the championship; his new purpose was to prove to everybody that he could win a championship. After a while, he won so much that he got tired of beating everybody else so he left basketball.

Eventually, he came back but, then, he lost during his first return game, so people started thinking that Michael Jordan was done – that he had lost and that he didn’t have it anymore; This only gave him a new purpose: to prove everybody wrong.

“It’s not even about winning to me, it’s about seeing everybody else loses. I just don’t want them to win.

Michael Jordan

He found his purpose.

How are you going to find your own purpose?

I’m going to give you 4 steps that are going to give you some ways to reflect on your own life and your own self so you can figure out your own purpose.

When was the last time you were jumping out of bed and were ON FIRE FOR ACTION?
When were you last excited for your life, every single day?

I don’t mean a one-time occasion where you are excited for the end of the long work week or have excitement before a trip because you know that something fun is going to happen.

Think back to that time and you will find a seed of what your purpose in life is.

What makes you happier than material gains?

We all do things for material gains;

We work to make money

We build our businesses to develop income streams

We talk to other people to get them to do the things that we want them to do and to buy the things we are selling.

We do a lot of things for material gains, but what is it that drives you?

What drives your ambition more than getting something material?

You have to be able to answer that question. You should not think that it’s just about money because money is only a tool that lets you do other things.

Even if it is money that’s driving you, what are you going to do with the money?

That’s where you’re going to find the seed of your purpose.

What brought you back from your biggest disappointment?

You should take the time to think about what your biggest disappointment in life is. What was your biggest setback?

Everyone has had low points in their lives but what are some of the things that have brought you back up from that point?

We all know that something helped you come back from it because if you didn’t, you would be dead right now. With the biggest setback that you’ve faced, you were able to get back from it.

What was it that brought you back from that setback?

What would you do, if you didn’t have to do anything?

Avoid answering this question with the same rote responses that everybody else gives. Everybody has these things on their checklist:

Traveling the world

Going on vacation

Setting your mom up for retirement

Buy a house

Throwing yourself a party

Paying off all your debts

But, after you’ve done all those things and if you didn’t have to do anything, what would you do?

Your answer to that question is the seed of your true purpose and your true calling in your life.

Purpose in Life: How do you find this?

Set aside time in a day where you have:

NO Podcast,

NO Internet,

NO Phone,

NO Social Media,

NO Music,

NO People Talking to You.

Just sit down quietly in a room without any distractions and think about all the things that I have told you.

Think about what makes you jump out of bed on fire for life

Think about what makes you happier than any material things;

Think about what brought you back from your biggest disappointment;

Think about what you would do if you didn’t have to do anything;

With those answers, you will start to find your purpose in life.
