This guy Rob, I knew from being around campus. I knew he was from New York. I had seen him play occasional pickup ball, but nothing serious. So when he showed up at practice one day, hanging on the sidelines, I wondered why. Then Coach announced that Rob believed he should be the basketball team. Coach called on Lamar, a junior point guard, to play Rob 1-on-1 for his chance.

It didn’t go well for Rob. And that was the last we saw of Rob as far as basketball went.

All the lining and promoting you may do (or try to do) in going after that elusive opportunity, don’t forget to be good when that chance happens — which usually won’t be on your schedule, since you’re not in the power position.
