Dr. Dre was signed to a company called Death Row through most of the 90s. Dre decided at one point that he wanted to leave the label and do… something else.

One problem: Dre’s current company owned all the master recordings of his classic music. If Dre were to leave Death Row, he’d be doing so while giving up those valuable assets.

Dre decided his freedom was worth more. Suge Knight, founder of Death Row, explained it as a “bad move for Dr. Dre, great love for Suge Knight.”

Dre later signed a white guy from Detroit named Eminem, and the rest is history.

Years later, Dre sold Beats Music to apple and became a near-billionaire in the process. Staying on Death Row, none of this probably could’ve happened.

This episode is about freedom: the costs to obtain it, and why any price is worth it.
