My middle school didn’t have a basketball team. So one of our gym teachers organized an intramural league for us, where we played against each other every Thursday before school.
We were to govern ourselves and split up the playing time equally, but the better, more developed and thus more confident players always dominated the minutes. I remember a teammate subbing himself into a game and calling for me to head to the bench.
I knew, though, that I wasn’t the one who should’ve been coming out at the time. I was being shafted for my playing time. I hesitated and started to tell another player, who was more confident and a better player than me, that is was in fact his turn to sit.
He yelled at me, “Get out!!”
The gym teacher, acting as referee, saw the whole scene. He just looked at me to see how I’d respond.
I walked to the bench.
Today’s show is about not just the additions that come with confidence, but the subtractions of what is no longer accepted and thing we no longer do or say.
