#435: Why You Should Care About Rankings, Top-Lists & Subjective Opinions

When I was in high school playing basketball, the #1 player in the class of 2000 was a guy named Eddie Griffin. Eddie was a 6’8” power forward/center from Philadelphia who had a sweet midrange jumper. I’d guarded Eddie once in a rec league game for a few plays. Long story short, I wasn’t big enough to guard him. He went on to Seton Hall for one year and was a top-10 NBA draft pick. Eddie died prematurely in a car accident several years later while still in the league. The year after that, #1 was a kid named Dajuan Wagner, from neighboring Camden, NJ, who had scored 100 (!!!) points in a high school game. HE was a top-10 pick. too.

I didn’t care about class rankings. Well, I knew about them, but I didn’t care about them as far as where my name was on the rankings lists.

That’s because I wasn’t on any of them and wasn’t close to getting on any of them. But if I had a chance to get on one of those rankings lists, I definitely would do what I need to do to get on one.

Today’s show will tell you why.
