I was an aspiring professional basketball player without a contract.
Though I wasn’t yet being compensated, I still had to show up to work, be in the gym, and train as if I already had a job, so that If and when that opportunity came, it wouldn’t be too late to get ready and whip myself into game shape.
Due to the signed-then-unsigned up-and-downness of my career, this cycle continued for years. I’ve spent more time in empty (save for me) gyms than anywhere else over the past ten years.
Despite being unknown and (often) unsigned, I knew I was a damn good basketball player. But no one knew about it. But what could I do to change that?
Then YouTube came along.
I started posting video of my training, and what do you know? People wanted to see it. I made more and more videos, sharing what I knew and helping people who had questions. Naturally this lead to creating products that people wanted and selling thousands of them. This wasn’t being done yet, by anyone in any sport. I was the initiator.
From 2009-2014, I created and sold products strictly based on basketball skills training (along with a few books). Basketball skills were selling and basketball players were buying. I didn’t need to do anything else, because this thing was working.
Was it sometimes boring, doing the same thing over and over again? Yes.
Was it ever annoying, answering the same questions over and over again? Hell yes.
But it was working. And a wise person sticks to what’s working.
Today’s show is about just that: recognizing where the results are coming from, and not allowing yourself to be distracted by anything other than those result-producing sources.
